HOW TO MAKE RIN MELTDOWN GUITAR
SIMPLE AND EASY

WHAT YOU NEED :
– Cardboard
– Cutter
– Paper or Newspaper
– Gold Acrylic Paint
– Paintbrush
– Black Acrylic Paint
– Hot Glue Gun
– Ceramic
– White Spray

Let’s start now!

First draw the guitar base on a piece of newspaper or any big paper then cut it out. Paste the paper on the cardboard and draw out the shape on the board following the lines. After that, use a cutter to cut the shape of the board out. Since the thickness of board is only 1cm, I cut out 4 boards.

Cut the two boards like the right side and two boards like the left side. After that I sprayed using white spray at the boards.

After the boards are dry, using a hot glue gun, stick the board together as you can see the 3d effects on the guitar. Don’t forget to use the leftover board to cut out the guitar stick. You can use papers to stick on the board if it’s hard for to spray.

Then start painting your guitar with gold acrylic paint. But if you can’t see the golden colour yet, you can use yellow acrylic paint first. After it’s dry, paint with gold acrylic.

Paint the stick with black acrylic paint. You’re allowed to use spray instead of paint. As for the end of the stick, paint gold acrylic on it. After all the boards are dry, using the hot glue gun again, stick the guitar stick together with the main board.

Paint gold acrylic again on a piece of paper and cut it into small rectangle. Then stick it on the guitar stick. FINALLY YOU’RE DONE!

1. Since cosplay becomes more and more popular, how do you think about the good things and also bad things on this performance art?

I think there are a lot of great cosplayers out there that want to keep this art form alive. I also believe that the more a person puts into their cosplay the better it will show. In the same breath, there are people out there who just run to the local store and toss on whatever item related to an anime and then call it cosplaying. I am aware that not everybody is crafty or has the money to make or obtain a decent cosplay but there should at least be some sign of effort. I really enjoy watching others get in cosplays regardless of if I know the anime or not. This is art and with art always comes critiques.

2. Do you consider yourself a “cosplayer” year round, or only when participating in certain activities?

I would consider myself a year round cosplayer. If I could always be in cosplay I would. There is nothing more fun to me than dressing in a new cosplay or walking around in my current cosplay and getting the attention and looks like what is he doing?!Lol I love cosplay and will probably be buried in my outfits!

3. Going to a venue with many people to watch you in costume and simply taking a photograph, which one is more meaningful?

Both are very meaningful. It is true a picture is worth a thousand words. But when you have somebody come up to you and ask for a photo with you or of you or get yelled at from people calling your characters name holds a dear place in my heart! Every time I am in cosplay and somebody knows who I am or supposed to be makes my heart melt. There really is nothing better than being there live. But photographs last forever! 😀

4. Is the creation of the costume or characters more valuable than the actual acting or vice versa, or is it a mix? As well, how much of the do-it-yourself mentality is admired? If someone just bought their whole costume, are they still a true cosplayer?

I think that if somebody buys the whole costume they are still a cosplayer. Not everybody has the ability to sew and make a new cosplay. As for me I am not talented enough to make my cosplays but when I go and see somebody who did make theirs I give them more respect than I would expect to get from mine. That takes a lot of talent and time. Those cosplayers are truly deserving of a title of amazing cosplayers.

5. Which contest theme do you mostly want to see at Miccostumes.com?

I would like to see some Deadman Wonderland or some more Soul Eater personally. But I don’t think that was the question. Theme for me would be battle or posed scenes to show the action of the character.

Way to Dawn Tutorial [The cheap way]

My tutorial will show you how to make beautiful props at affordable prices.

First we start off with a big block of foam from your local home depot/Lowes! One sheet will do, you can get the thinner one that costs around $10 because the sheet is big enough to double up [and save money]. [Remember that you cannot use a jigsaw on the thinner foam, it will only break it, you have to cut it out by hand with an exacto knife]

Once we have our foam, draw out the shape of the way to dawn. There are 2 ways to do this. The way we did it was just drawing it out by hand, but if you are not an artist, you can always go to kinkos and get a blown up picture of the keyblade to trace. Next, you can start cutting out the keyblade you’re your knife. [don’t worry too much if a piece breaks off while you’re cutting, this happened to me in the pic below, you can just hot glue it back on. But be NEAT!]

Once you have cut out one, place the cut out keyblade on top of your remaining block of foam and trace it. Then cut out a second keyblade.

Once you have cut out both sides to your keyblade you can attach your wooden dowel to one side. Remember, the wooden dowel should be thick! You are supporting a keyblade that is very thin in the middle and is meant to hold up a very thick blade. I used a yard stick from home depot. I also used a smaller piece of wood to provide support on the wing part of the blade. I used hot glue to attach this. Make sure the glue is not TOO hot, or else the foam will melt. Don’t worry if it doesn’t glue perfectly, just make sure it is attached enough. We will be bonding it with bonding adhesive later. [Also note how thin the foam is as well, this is why we are doubling up.]

Next, glue the two sides of the keyblade together. You will have a gap in between the two sides of the keyblade, don’t worry. We will bond the two sides together with adhesive and finish off the gaps with caulk.

Use adhesive caulking to fill the gaps. Wait for this to dry. I left mine to dry for an entire day. Then take regular caulk and finish off any imperfections. Now we can begin carving the keyblade details. First draw out the keyblade the details in sections. Then take a wood rasp and begin carving. Remember to ALWAYS wear a mask when carving anything out of foam.

Once finished with a section, use different degrees of sandpaper until the area is smooth. Do this for the entire keyblade. The wood rasp makes carving a lot easier.

Now create the two eyes (one for each side) that will be attached near the handle and the heartless symbol for the key charm.

For the keyblade use regular white primer (for painting walls) and paint the entire keyblade with 6 full coats of this. If you can’t get primer, regular white house paint will work as well. This will get the keyblade ready to be spray painted. If it is sprayed directly the spray paint will eat the foam.

Section off sections of the keyblade using painters tape. Spray paint each section with its primary colors. I used a dark blue for the majority of the blade, red and cream for the both wing sections. This will make it easier because the majority of the blade is already painted.

Now begin to add the details. I used regular acrylic paint for this. Blend the paint together to create new colors. Use darker colors for shadows.

Finally attach the chain with hot glue (I used a plastic chain from iparty). Attach the heartless charm to the chain. And the two eyes near the handle (after painting). Now we must add the red to the handle. I decided to use red electrical tape for this. I looked at the photo of the blade and tried to match it as best as I could.

Cosplay Tutorial Contest – Making Articuno Wings by Roxy

Making Articuno Wings

Amount of time:

1-2 days of continous work

What you will need:

About four to five yards of blue Fabric (depending on how long your arm is and if mistakes are made)
Matching Blue thread
About two yards of sturdy Interfacing
Measuring Tape (to measure your arm length and circumferance at the thickest part of your arm)
Paper
Pencil
Black Sharpie marker
Scissors
Fabric Glue
A Sewing needle/Sewing Machine
2 Small wooden dowels

Step One: Find references.

I do know that it is hard to be exact sometimes. And being exact can be hard to manage within cosplay. So for those whom just want to do it as they wish you can skip this step. For others who want to be as close as possible continue reading. Finding actual art is rather hard for this particular character since there is a lot of fanart. Finding actual work from the show is best. Here is actually a website that I had used for reference:  legendarybirds.webs.com

Step Two: Drawing it out

The most important part to making the wings is drawing out the pattern. It serves as a guide for the fabric. So sketch out the wing on a large sheet of paper (or several taped pieces of paper if you don’t own any large sheets). Then once you are confident and like what you drew, cut it out as close to the lines as possible. Make sure to measure your arm length and circumference at the thickiest part of your arm first to make sure that it will fit. It should look like this when cut out:

Step Three: Tracing onto the Interfacing

The interfacing is used to help the wing keep shape while you are wearing it. If you don’t feel like you need it then don’t worry about this step. Though for those who want it to stay sturdy, please read on. Take the cut out paper pattern you had used and trace with the marker of the shape. Then cut out the shape. You will need to do this twice, one for each wing.

Step Four: The Fabric

Taking the fabric, either trace with interfacing pattern, do not use sharpie for this. use marker that will not bleed through the fabric, or if you have a very sturdy hand and safety pins cut along the pattern, make sure not to make it exact and a bit bigger than the pattern to leave space in order to sew. you will need to do this four times (two fabric wings per wing). Make sure the they match so sewing will be easier.

Step Five: Sewing

Using the sewing machine, or sewing needle if you prefer hand sewing, sew the top(not where the individual feathers are) as if it was a sleeve. Then using the machine or hand sewing, sew the individual feathers, make sure to leave a hole at the back of the wing in order to put your arm in. As if if it was a sleeve for a shirt. Then turn it inside out, being careful not to pop seams

Step Six: Putting in the interfacing

One of the hardest steps. You need to put the interfacing into the wing you had made, putting each piece in their place in the fabric. It is rather difficult to do since you do need to struggle a little with it if it is not a bit smaller than the actual wing. Here is what the finished product should look like (one wing)

Incase the wing bends at the end:

Use the wooden dowels to straighten out the wing. If wishing to attach them, use fabric glue and sewing them on by putting notches into the dowel in various spots.

Incase of popped seams:

Use what people call the “invisidle stitich” also known as the very tiny stitch in order to fix your mistake and also hide it.
