My Big Wow Comic Fest 2015

This Post is submitted by Evel Fett Cosplay , amazing!

Day 1:

Big Wow Comicfest 2015 was held in the San Jose Convention Center on April 1819. This is one of my favorite conventions to attend. It is for true comic book fans and cosplayers. There had to be at least 5,000 people waiting to receive their badges the first day of arriving at Big Wow. The Big Wow staff was on point! Took about 15 min to enter and get into the site. The crowd was high with anticipation! There was everything from cosplay, geeks, nerds, and comic fans all awaiting for the door to open. The door opens and everybody rushes in like wild animals. “geeked out” and not knowing where to go first, I decide to hit cosplay roll to see the professional cosplayers booth. I saw one of my closes friends there, Vegas Power Girl (@VegasPG) Snapped some pics and chatted it up with her. I found out that she will be doing a panel on Sunday. I then interviewed her for Miccostumes.com. Then exchanging some kisses, I said bye, and moved on to the other awesome things Big Wow had to offer.

My favorite comic book illustrator Frank Cho. Greeting the wonderful Frank, we exchanged the great news that I am teaming up with miccostumes.com to be there Convention Reporter. As Frank high fived me he said “See all that hard work paid off bro!” Frank was teasing me and told me to not miss his panel, and i said “Frank I wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world.”I was then fighting through the crowd to go and try to see the Back to the Future Delorean, and the Ecto One from Ghostbusters. I snapped a lot of great pictures.

Next, I headed to the panels, the most important one for me was “Cosplay Stars”. It was a great panel and super informative. The panels was lead by some of the biggest stars of cosplay, and all I can say is you had to be there!

Day 2:

The crowds were bigger, the costumes were better, and anticipation was greater. I debuted my newest creation from Dragonball Z, Mr. Satan and my bro Mark was Ox king. We were huge hits! We could not go for one second without being stopped. Frank Cho’s panel was just unbelievable! He is not only the best artist that Marvel and Dc has ever had, but also the most hilarious guy alive. This year was a little different than most years, instead of Frank drawing or sketching Ivy Doomkitty, Frank drew cosplay superstar Riddle who was cosplaying as spider women.

Overall Big Wow is one of my favorite conventions and something i will never miss! It is definitely something that you have to see!

Hey guys I’m Chaos Fox I may be considered a veteran cosplayer as I have been cosplaying for over 6 years now but honestly I’m just your typical nerd who set up a cosplay studio in her basement.  If I’m not watching anime, raging over games then I’m sewing or covered in wig hairs.  I’m looking forward to learning more and teaching others.  I hope you will all enjoy my blogs!

Cosplay Ideas- Phantom Thieves! (and their companions)

I’ve loved phantom thieves since I was a kid. Their fantastical flair and ability to steal anything from under anyone’s nose fascinate me to this day, even if their wild stunts do sometimes defy the laws of physics. Their fondness for theatrics are shown through the costumes they wear, which make them very fun characters to cosplay!

Without further ado, let’s begin!

1. KAITOU KID

Starting off with a classic and one of my favourites! Magic-obsessed teenager Kuroba Kaito by day, elusive-yet-showy thief by night, Kaitou Kid’s deft sleights of hand, outrageous tactics, and daring escapes (including driving a car out of a skyscraper window) have dazzled fans since 1987. Although it seems like he steals for the fun of it, Kid is actually trying to find and destroy a gem that grants immortality before the organisation that killed his father can get to it.

You can find him in the Magic Kaito manga, the 2014 adaptation Magic Kaito 1412, or the Detective Conan series (which is known as Case Closed in the US), where he often appears as a rival of the main character, Edogawa Conan.

Many of the side characters have fairly simple designs as well, so this is a great group cosplay idea for beginners!

One of the few who are a match for Kaitou Kid, the genius detective Hakuba Saguru

2. PHANTOM R

Another teenager in disguise, Phantom R is a thief slightly unlike his more traditional associates – he returns the artworks he steals! He only pursues treasures that may hold a clue to his missing father, and has no need to keep them if they do not prove to be useful. When he isn’t busy sneaking around in museums, the swift Phantom R spends the remainder of his nights jumping over the rooftops and theatre balconies of Paris with his pet dog Fondue as he evades the police force. The rollerblading police force. When he isn’t up to his usual hijinks as a thief, he prefers to flip pancakes and toss treats to Fondue to the beat of the music in this funky (and, sadly, obscure) rhythm game from Sega.

3. KAITOU JEANNE

The 1998 manga Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne (which saw an anime adaptation a year later) reveals the secret life of high school gymnast Kusakabe Maron. A modern day reincarnation of the French heroine Jeanne D’Arc, Kaitou Jeanne is Maron in her transformed phantom thief/magical girl state. Though, technically, she does not steal anything – she is on a sacred mission to save God which involves defeating demons that just happen to reside in artworks. After the demons are defeated, the artwork disappears so it seems like they were stolen. Thus, the public begins to call her a phantom thief.

Jeanne’s rival, Kaitou Sinbad. Unbeknownst to her, Sinbad knows of her real identity although she does not know his.

5 Ways To Find Cosplay Ideas

Gone are the glorious days where you knew exactly what to cosplay, now a distant memory as you sift through all the characters you know, hoping for a bolt of inspiration to strike. Newbies and veterans alike, this is a problem nearly every cosplayer can empathise with.

I’ve had my fair share of staring blankly while fruitlessly trying to think of something, but it doesn’t mean you will have to! Hopefully this guide will make it easier for you to find “the one” and leave you with one less thing to worry about as the next convention crawls closer.

Don't worry, Hatoful Boyfriend has human designs which you can cosplay!
It’s like trying to pick a romance route but much worse.

Read on after the cut for some ideas!

1. ANICHART

Anichart.net is an extremely handy website listing all the new anime coming out each season each year, which you can use to check the current season or even skip ahead to the upcoming seasons. As you pick out new anime to watch, you will surely find someone you would like to cosplay. Anichart even has an archive which you can use to go back in time and see anime that was airing up to 20 years ago!

Out of these I'm enjoying Kaitou Joker the most
You can also color-code the various titles. I’ve highlighted what I want to watch, what I don’t want to watch, and what I might want to watch.

2. COSPLAY SHOPS

Like right here at Miccostumes! Window shopping is always nice, and with the internet it’s even easier. Randomly browsing cosplays and wigs is fun, but can be boring for some – however, this method is good because of the variety concentrated in one place which lets you look at lots of ideas in a short amount of time. Have a look through with your friends and maybe family members! Plus, the price is listed, so budgeting is a cinch.

I do love me some uniforms.

null

Vocaloid is excellent as the characters often keep the same hairstyle, so you can reuse your wig many times and save money.

Don’t just stop at cosplays and wigs – expand your horizon to cover shoes, props, and accessories too!

3. ANIME CHARACTERS DATABASE

With Anime Characters Database, you can enter a list of characteristics and search for someone you like the look of or think you would suit appearance-wise. This website is also very handy if you already have a wig or some contacts and would like to use them again.

null

I have a short blue wig, brown contacts, and a low budget… I wonder who I could cosplay next?

null

Be as general or as specific as you want!

“What if I want to try something other than anime?” you ask. Well, I hope you like video games, because the next thing I’m going to recommend is:

4. CREATIVE UNCUT

Creative Uncut is an archive of concept art from all sorts of video games. This website is a bit more tedious to go through, but concept art is an excellent resource particularly for those who want to make their own cosplays as you can see a lot more detail in them.

null

The “Zero Escape” series is a personal favourite of mine.

null

Concept art like this will give you a good idea of the cosplay’s level of difficulty. This is Mitsuru from the “Persona” video game series, and as you can see, her outfit is quite detailed and requires a high level of skill – not a good choice if you are just starting out.

5. YOUR LOCAL COSPLAY COMMUNITY

Hit up your local cosplay community for some fresh ideas! Just search your local area/city and “cosplay” or “cosplayers” on Facebook or Google and voila! These communities serve as hubs for general cosplay discussion, whether you need help with looking for something to cosplay, making a prop, recruiting members for a group cosplay, or if you’re curious as to what other people are up to.  Many communities also host meet-ups which is a great way to make new friends!

Great fun!

Ask them for recommendations on not just anime, manga, and games, but also things like comics and movies! Photo source: http://www.meetup.com/sacgeeks/events/185896272/

And that was 5 places to turn to when you need some new content! What do you usually do when you run out of ideas? Let us know in the comments!

If none of these tickle your fancy, don’t sweat – stay tuned for more articles!
